Digital ID in Apple Wallet: The New Seamless Way to Travel

Apple’s newest travel feature makes airport screening smoother than ever. In this guide, I’ll show you how to set up digital ID in Apple Wallet, what it is, and how to use it at TSA checkpoints.

What Is Digital ID?

Digital ID is Apple’s newest way to keep your identification securely inside Apple Wallet. Instead of pulling out a physical ID at security, you can present it using your device and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.

A few important details:

  • Uses your U.S. passport to verify your identity during setup
  • Works for domestic travel only and only at participating TSA checkpoints
  • Not a replacement for your physical passport
  • Useful even if your state ID is not REAL ID–compliant
  • Expected to expand into businesses, apps, and online verification

Is Digital ID Secure?

Yes.

Digital ID uses encrypted, on-device storage. Your identifying information stays on your iPhone or Apple Watch, not on Apple’s servers.

Apple cannot see:

  • When you use your Digital ID
  • Where you use it
  • What information you share

Each time you present your ID, you will review exactly what is being requested and approve it with Face ID or Touch ID. You should never have to hand over your phone or unlock it for anyone.

How to Set Up Digital ID in Apple Wallet

Setting up Digital ID takes just a few minutes. Here is how to do it:

Step 1 — Open the Wallet App

Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the plus button at the top.

Step 2 — Select “Driver’s License or ID Card”

Choose:

Driver’s License and ID Cards → Digital ID

Step 3 — Scan Your U.S. Passport

You will be prompted to:

  1. Scan the photo page of your passport
  2. Hold your iPhone near the back cover to read the embedded chip

This confirms the information is genuine.

Step 4 — Complete Face Verification

Apple will ask you to:

  • Take a selfie
  • Perform simple head or facial movements

This ensures the Digital ID belongs to you.

Step 5 — Verification and Completion

Once approved, your Digital ID automatically appears in Apple Wallet.
