For travelers visiting Europe, the Schengen 90/180-day rule determines how long you can stay without a visa. The rule allows visa-exempt travelers to spend up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the entire Schengen Area, not 90 days per country.
The 180-day period is calculated backward from each day of your stay, meaning previous trips count toward your total.
Contrary to a common misconception, leaving the Schengen Area briefly does not reset your 90-day allowance. The rule is based on a rolling 180-day calculation, not the number of times you cross the border.
What is the Schengen Area?
The Schengen Area is a group of European countries that have removed routine border checks between member countries, allowing travelers to move freely between participating countries. For visa-exempt travelers, the Schengen Area is treated as a single territory for the 90-days-within-180-days rule.
It includes most EU countries—like France, Italy, Spain, and Germany—as well as a few non-EU members such as Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
It is important to note that the Schengen Area and the European Union are not the same thing. Some EU countries are not part of Schengen, and some Schengen countries are not members of the EU.
How to Calculate Your Schengen 90/180 Days
This Schengen 90/180 Day Rule is confusing. How can I tell if I’m violating the rule?
To calculate your remaining days, look backward 180 days from any date you plan to be in the Schengen Area and count every day you were physically present in a Schengen country during that period.
Example: The Schengen 90/180 Day Rule in play:
You spent January 1 to March 1 in France (60 days), then returned to a Schengen country on July 1.
On July 1, border control looks back 180 days, to January 2:
- Your January 2–March 1 days (59 days) still count toward your 90-day total, because they are within the previous 180-day window.
- January 1 is now outside the 180-day window and no longer counts toward your 90-day total.
- Note: Every day you are physically present in the Schengen Area counts as a “day of stay,” including the day of entry and the day of exit.
How EES Affects the 90/180-Day Rule
The Schengen 90/180-day rule itself has not changed. However, the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) creates a digital record of entries and exits, making it easier for border authorities to track time spent in the Schengen Area.
Travelers should keep accurate records of their travel dates and understand their remaining days before departure.
